What Shampoo Bars Do & How they Differ from Liquid Shampoo

At their core, shampoo bars do the same job as liquid shampoos: they lift oil, dirt, and buildup from your hair and scalp. The difference isn’t in what they do. It’s in how they do it.

Instead of being suspended in water and poured out of a bottle, the cleansing agents (called surfactants) in shampoo bars are bound into a solid form. When you apply water, lather, and rub the bar between your hands or directly on your hair, it creates a cleansing foam just like liquid shampoo. The result? Clean hair, but with a much smaller environmental footprint.

Not All “Shampoo Bars” Are Created Equal

You might have seen bars marketed as “shampoo bars” that are essentially just soap. While they may lather, they don’t always cleanse or balance your hair the way true shampoo bars do. Here’s why:

  • Shampoo Bars with Surfactants: True shampoo bars, like ours, use gentle surfactants to clean. Surfactants lift oil and dirt from your scalp without stripping your hair of natural moisture. They’re formulated to match the pH of your scalp and hair, leaving your hair soft and manageable.

  • Soap-Based “Shampoo Bars”: These are essentially regular soap bars in different packaging. Soap can have a higher pH, which may leave hair feeling dry, sticky, or difficult to manage. Over time, residue can build up, making your hair look dull or feel brittle.

By choosing a shampoo bar formulated with surfactants, you get all the environmental and travel-friendly benefits of a bar without sacrificing hair health. Spriggits bars are designed to clean, nourish, and respect your hair, not just take up less space on your shelf. We use surfactants (cleansing ingredients) derived from plants. We do not use sulfates, parabens, silicones, etc.. which are found in many bottles shampoos.

Why Conditioner Bars Are a Smart Pairing

While shampoo bars cleanse, conditioner bars restore and soften. They coat the hair shaft with gentle conditioning agents that help reduce tangles, smooth the cuticle, and lock in moisture.

Our Conditioner bars are particularly great because they:

  • reduce plastic use even further

  • avoid heavy silicones found in many liquid conditioners

  • last a long time when used correctly

  • save space on your shelf and your suitcase

Together, a shampoo bar and conditioner bar give you the full wash-and-care experience without plastic bottles and harsh chemicals.

How to Use Shampoo & Conditioner Bars Correctly

If you’ve never used solid bars on your hair before, a few simple steps make all the difference.

Before Washing

  • Brush your hair to remove tangles

  • Wet your hair thoroughly

Shampoo Bar Tips

  • Option 1: Rub the wet bar directly onto your hair in short strokes, focusing on your scalp and avoiding your ends.

  • Option 2: Lather the bar between your hands and apply the foam to your scalp.

  • Work the lather in your hair like you would liquid shampoo

Rinse thoroughly.

Conditioner Bar Tips

  • After rinsing shampoo, use your conditioner bar like you would a liquid: glide it over your strands, especially the mid-lengths to ends. This will likely take more time than you are used to but its so worth it!

  • massage into your hair and let sit for a few minutes while you process with the rest of your shower routine like washing your body or shaving

  • rinse from your hair

  • For extra dry hair you may do a partial rinse that leaves a very small amount remaining in your hair for extra conditioning

Common Questions People Ask

Will bars make my hair greasy at first? This will depend on the bar you try first. Everyone's hair is different and each bar on the market is a bit different too. Our customers have reported no transition time when swapping from bottle to bar for our hair care products. Some of our customers not new to shampoo bars have reported needing transition times for their hair with products from other brands. This will depend majorily on the products you used before and the formulation of the one you are swapping to.

Do shampoo bars work on all hair types? Yes. Shampoo bars will cleanse any hair type be it curly, straight, fine, or thick hair. The key is knowing how to lather and rinse properly. If your hair tends to be very dry, pairing the bar with a conditioner bar helps balance moisture.

Do they last as long as liquid shampoo/conditioner? Generally, yes. Because there’s no water in the product, you’re paying only for active ingredients. With proper drying between washes, bars can outlast many bottles. Its also important to note you need far less of the product that you would a liquid. Typically 3 swipes from front to back of the scalp is an ample amount of shampoo to get sufficient lather and cleanse. Conditioner will vary depending on the thickness, dryness, and length of your hair.

Why People Are Switching

People choose shampoo and conditioner bars for a few big reasons:

🌿 Less Plastic Waste

You’re not repeatedly buying and tossing plastic bottles. Fewer products in plastic means less waste heading to the landfill or recycling centers.

🧼 Simpler, Cleaner Formulas

Solid bars often use fewer synthetic fillers and more intentional ingredients that nourish hair without excess baggage.

♻️ Travel-Friendly

No spills, no TSA liquids limit, no bulky bottles.

🎯 Longevity

When cared for properly (kept dry between uses), bars can last a surprisingly long time, often longer than a liquid bottle of the same price point.
